It’s not just about BBQs, parties and fireworks. It’s not about the extra eight hours off work and the coveted three-day weekend. Memorial Day is so much more than another holiday on the calendar: It’s an annual day of observance that’s meant to honor the courageous heroes of our nation, those who have proudly fought for the everyday freedoms and rights we enjoy as citizens of this country. They’re things we take for granted. And, in taking them for granted, we lose sight of the brave men and women who willingly lost their lives in battle so that people like you and me could prosper and uphold the United States of America’s standing as the “land of the free and the home of the brave.”
The sheer number of airmen, soldiers, sailors and Marines who’ve given their lives for their country in the many wars we’ve been involved in during our nation’s history is disheartening. Forty-two million lives, to be exact. But did you realize that nearly 7,000 American servicemen and women have died in the wars still being fought Afghanistan and Iraq, and that many are still sacrificing for us over there right this very moment? At this second, there is someone fighting for you and me – and, at the same time, praying they’ll come home to their family, too.
Since Freedom is in our name, we naturally support the valiant efforts of our troops as well. While “freedom” isn’t traditionally considered free, we’re honoring these often-forgotten men and women with a complimentary cookout at Glenn’s Freedom Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram on May 23, 2015 from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. Aside from the traditional BBQ fare and festivities, check out the additional fun details of this event that involves the upcoming rodeo, one that’ll potentially be part of a live radio broadcast on the radio with the help of our local Rotary Club:
- Adam Menker and other members of the UK Rodeo Team will be onsite representing Boot Barn and hyping up next month’s competitive rodeo
- Guests may register for a $250 Boot Barn coupon toward a pair of barn-storming boots (contest runs May 23 through June 13, 2015, with the winner notified on June 15 and presented with their boots during a meet-and-greet at the rodeo)
- Attendees will have the chance to score two free tickets to the rodeo with each new vehicle or Ram truck purchase taking place the day of the cookout, with additional ticket giveaways throughout the day
- The UK Rodeo Team will have their roping dummies on display for folks to watch them wrangle the “cattle” with ease – and they’ll hand over the reins to anyone who’d like to give it a shot, too!
We’re giving you something else as well: If you purchase rodeo tickets at Glenn’s Freedom Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, you’ll receive a $9.99 oil change voucher as a display of our appreciation (excluding diesel, SRT8 and synthetic).
And speaking of giving, why not consider giving something to our deployed troops observing Memorial Day in a land so far away and different? Please consider bringing in a useful item that can go toward a morale-boosting care package, or even just a simple note with encouraging words. As you’re enjoying that second or third hot dog with extra relish and mustard, just think how much someone deployed might miss something as simple and meaningless. Something like an ordinary hot dog.
I assure you just about anything would greatly be appreciated by a serviceman or woman defending our freedom, no matter how simple and seemingly meaningless. And how do I know this? I’m a fiancée of an Air Force captain who is currently deployed in a hostile area without the comforts of home. He proudly accepted this mission and is truly honored to do his part in protecting our nation. He is my hero, as are the tens of thousands of others defending us across the globe right now – along with the millions of military members who have already given their lives for the American flag.
Here’s my pledge, Lexington: I will personally see to it that your donation is sent to a soldier, sailor, airman or Marine who’s in need of a smile or, if you prefer, to someone at specific base or a particular member of a certain military branch. Whatever it is and whenever you bring it to Glenn’s Freedom Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, I will ensure it makes its way overseas to a deployed service member who would be touched by even the smallest gesture of kindness. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any questions regarding my pledge or to find out other ways you can get involved.
In the meantime, be sure to thank and honor those who have served whenever or however you’re able – as well as their families who have sacrificed so much, too. We look forward to seeing you this Saturday at our Memorial Day cookout to kick up our boots, enjoy some delicious barbecue and celebrate all-American bravery!
