Here at Glenn’s Freedom Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, sometimes we get asked a question that we don’t have the answer to, right off the tops of our heads. Last week, we were asked how the Jeep Wrangler got its’ start, and we were stumped for a minute or two. When we started to research a little bit further, we saw this quote:
“The original Jeep vehicle was born of necessity, and hand-built in just seven weeks with lots of hard work and genius.”
…and we fell in love with the Jeep Wrangler all over again!
During World War II, the U.S. Army had been looking for a fast, lightweight all-terrain reconnaissance vehicle. Things had started to shift, and not in a good way, so the Army asked automobile manufacturers asking to get a running prototype for such a vehicle in just 49 days.
The Bantam Car Company answered the call and their first hand-built prototype was completed and running by September 21, 1940, meeting the 49-day deadline. And thus the Jeep was born.
So this is where it got complicated, The Bantam Car Company was in a shaky financial position and couldn’t manufacture the car, so the Army gave the prototype to Willys-Overland, and the Jeep became known as the vehicle who could go anywhere and do anything, not a bad claim to fame!
In 1950, Willys obtained a United States Trademark Registration for the Jeep trademark, and today, Chrysler Corporation, owns over 1,100 registrations for the Jeep trademark throughout the world – it’s still going as strong as it was at its inception.
Of course, through the years there’ve been a slew of Jeep vehicles in the lineup, such as the CJ-2A, the Jeep All-Steel Station Wagon (which became the Jeep Cherokee) the J-Series Jeep Wagoneer, and in 1983, the Jeep Wrangler.
There’s so much more to this story than we’ve even touched, but we just wanted to give you a rough outline of how storied and rich the history of the Jeep Wrangler is. We’d love to chat some more about it with you, but it looks like our breaks over and we need to get back out on the floor! Stop by today and let us show you our extensive 2015 Jeep inventory, and maybe fill in the rest of the story!
